My beloved son
Don Bosco wrote many letters to young people. For the scope of this study, only a limited selection of letters is taken into consideration. Most letters to youngsters are of a spiritual and pedagogical nature. In this article, we examine in which way Don Bosco accompanied youngsters by writing them letters. The study was done on the occasion of the biannual Forum Salesianum and was published in the Journal of Salesian Studies. It is online and for free available here.

Il cuore parla al cuore, the heart speaks to the heart
To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis de Sales, I was asked by our University’s Faculty of Social Communication to write an article on the origins and significance of Saint Francis de Sales as the patron of writers and journalists. The article offers an illuminating look at the reasons why Francis de Sales was chosen. Following the canonisation of Titus Brandsma, it is claimed from Dutch journalistic circles that Francis de Sales, as the patron of journalists, is not the best choice because he is not a real journalist. However, this is very short-sighted, because, as I demonstrate in the article, Francis de Sales is not the patron of journalists because he himself is said to be a journalist.

Editore of the thematical issue of the Journal “Salesianum” on the occasion of the 400 anniversary of Saint Francis de Sales
The intention of the monographic issue is not only to pay homage to Francis de Sales; many authors and writers before us have already done it and we can only join them. In this issue on the Bishop of Geneva, we wanted to give various authors the opportunity to study the Salesian heritage by looking at the past, the present and the future.
Saint Joseph, the Saviour of the Saviour of the world in “Salesianum”
In the Dictionnaire de spiritualité, the word “Joseph (Saint)” says: “[Francis de Sales] his reflections in letters and sermons, especially in his 19th Entretien, show a fullness of doctrine and a deep piety which he communicated to Jeanne de Chantal and the Visitandines”. A legitimate question one might ask is: “What image of Saint Joseph is portrayed by Francis de Sales in his works?” The article begins with a brief presentation of the devotion to and study of Joseph, starting from the Middle Ages to the end of the 16th century. It then analyses where Joseph is mentioned in the works of the bishop of Geneva. This permits to discuss in detail the way he represents Saint Joseph. This transversal and thematic reading of the OEuvres de Saint François de Sales, èdition complète, Annecy, allows to get a clear picture of the idea and the way Joseph is used by the bishop in his writings and also to become acquainted with Francis’ beautiful lexicon. Joseph is used by Francis mainly for pastoral purposes and is presented as a father, husband and the righteous, but also as the obedient and humble man who trusted in Divine Providence.

Article on Saint Francis de Sales in “Tertio”
December 28 marks the four hundredth anniversary of the death of the French theologian, founder of the Congregation of the Visitation of Mary, mystic and bishop Francis de Sales (1567-1622). Many priests and religious found inspiration in him. Don Bosco even named his congregation after this saint: the Salesians. So it is no coincidence that “Tertio” a catholic journal of Flanders asked to write about the life and ideas of Francis de Sales.

The Role of the “Educational Presence” in the Memoires of the Oratory and some Biographies written by Don Bosco
The Salesian educator is a guide in the realization of the own vocation.
Talking about the educational presence, as presented by Don Bosco in the biographies of youngsters like Savio, Magone, Besucco, means we have to analyze these documents to see how he, in a narrative way, describes his own role in their lives. Even if he doesn’t mention himself by his own name, sometimes we find direct and indirect references to him. Because the lives of these boys are well known, we would like to add to our analysis three other biographies: Pietro, Valentino and Severino. In these writings, we can find similar indications concerning the educational presence, and we can learn what the absence of a good educator means for the life of youngsters. In the article is shown what happens when there is a guide, like in the life of the young Giovanni Bosco, and when there is no guide or a bad guide like in the lives of Pietro, Valentino and Severino. Three biographies written by Don Bosco.

Il processo di discernimento vocazionale di Don Bosco
San Giovanni Bosco ha avuto, grazie al sostegno e aiuto di tantissime persone, la possibilità di sviluppare ed elaborare il proprio progetto di vita secondo la chiamata divina. Nel tempo, sin dalla sua giovinezza la sua vocazione è maturata.
Le Memorie dell’Oratorio permettono anche una lettura spirituale del discernimento vocazionale di Don Bosco. Il Santo Torinese interpreta i fatti in un certo modo per dare un significato profondo all’iniziativa divina nella sua vita. Il motivo per il quale voleva diventare sacerdote era per lavorare per i giovani e farli diventare onesti cittadini e buoni cristiani La storia vocazionale di Don Bosco e il modello sacerdotale presentato nelle Memorie dell’Oratorio sono gli esempi da seguire per i salesiani.

La pedagogia della scelta nelle narrazioni biografiche di Don Giovanni Bosco
Contributo nel convegno universitario “Giovani e scelte di vita. Prospettive educative” in occasione del sinodo dei vescovi su “I giovani, la fede e il discernimento vocazionale” del ottobre 2018.
L’ermeneutica di alcune fonti salesiane offre la possibilità di mettersi a confronto con l’esperienza educativa e formativa di san Giovanni Bosco. Lo scopo è di far emergere dagli scritti, le “vite” scritte da don Bosco, gli atteggiamenti e i valori, i modelli e le strategie che aiutano i giovani a maturare nella loro vocazione umana e cristiana e a descrivere le caratteristiche che qualificano l’educatore come accompagnatori alle scelte.

La predicazione inedita di Giovanni Borel agli allievi del Collegio di San Francesco da Paola. Proposta formativa e confronto con Don Bosco
Questa ricerca studia gli ottanta manoscritti inediti della predicazione di Giovanni Borel, ai giovani allievi del Collegio di S. Francesco da Paola dal 1829 al 1844, e analizza le tematiche dottrinali, etiche ed ascetico-spirituali da lui trattate. L’obiettivo principale è indagare le caratteristiche e i contenuti fondamentali della proposta formativa presentata agli studenti di quella importante scuola torinese (figli della borghesia e della nobiltà), in quel preciso momento storico in cui si andavano formando i quadri del futuro stato unitario.
La ricerca è significativa per la storia dell’educazione e della pastorale. Infatti offre elementi interessanti per comprendere il modello formativo della scuola sabauda nella Restaurazione, il motivo del ruolo centrale riservato alla religione nell’educazione e alla figura del direttore spirituale nelle scuole del tempo, e arricchisce il panorama degli studi sulla pastorale e la spiritualità giovanile dell’Ottocento. Permette anche di conoscere aspetti, culturali che potrebbero aiutare a comprendere la mentalità, le visioni e le scelte e gli esiti della generazione formata in quegli anni.
